“If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.”

Edward Hopper

I am Amir Azari. Born and bred in Tehran, Iran. A big, busy, but lovely city.

My professional career started in 2003 when I was about 21 years old, working in an automobile company as an international marketing assistant. During those years, I was studying electronic engineering and I was working at the same time.

If someone had told me in those years that my profession was going to be an artist and photographer, I would have introduced that person to television as a stand-up comedy writer. Nonetheless, that’s what happened to me.

To accompany an old friend, I went to the Museum of Contemporary Art for the first time to visit the conceptual art exhibition, and perhaps that’s when the first spark flared in me. I was more and more tired of the corporate work environment and the electrical field, so I left the university on the advice of my friend to participate in the art entrance examination.

You have no idea how difficult it was to pass the entrance exam of Iranian universities at the time, specifically for someone who only knew that Da Vinci was a painter. Heh, what a vast treasure of artistic information! 😊

I would like to choose industrial design, but my drawing is still terrible, although I take a great pleasure in looking at paintings, and draw inspiration from them for most of my work.

I was accepted at Tehran University of Arts and decided to study photography upon the recommendation of the same friend. In the first two semesters, I was on the verge of being expelled from the university because of academic probation, until a friend offered me a job as a photographer, and since then my life has changed. Even today, I teach at the same university from which I was about to be expelled. Wow, what a change!

This was a short story of how I entered this world. For me, life resembles the waves of the sea; sometimes fierce and deadly, and sometimes enjoyable to surf.

I am currently in Paris. I travel to Iran to hold photography classes and workshops, or to do special projects. I love teaching photography.

Making a picture has constantly been more appealing to me than just taking one. Complex lighting, conceptuality of the images and storytelling are among the characteristics of my work.

Art is a world that remains even if its creator has passed away.
